Researchers studied two large Internet surveys involving a group of women. Their background characteristics, health conditions, and menopause status were collected, in addition to measurements of sleep quality and quantity.
A total of 164 subjects were enrolled, 62 with diabetes and 102 without any metabolic problems.
Women with diabetes had 9.5 on the index scale compared to 7 for their non-diabetic counterparts in terms of sleep-related symptoms. Furthermore, diabetic women had more severe sleep disturbances: 33.42 compared to 21.87.
These results show that diabetic middle-aged women experience more sleep disturbances than their non-diabetic counterparts. This phenomenon was particularly pronounced among Asian American women, but it was also evident in women of all the four races they studied in the United States. There is no evidence that sleep problems are exclusive to diabetic middle-aged females, according to a 2017 article in the Indian Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism.
